Jesus Cares Monistries had an opportunity to work with 12 Transform Team from the UK Tearfund. The team came for 2 weeks and had made very big impact in the lives of the children. They worked with us in Lusaka and Central Provinces.

The team was very excited and eager to do everything that was assigned to them.

We are glad that this is not the end, we will be working with another team in August 2009 from Tearfund

Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday

Jesus Cares in partnership with Children in Need (CHIN) and Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund in June this year organized a Children and Youth Parliament in Zambia. This was to commemorate the 90th Birthday of Former South African President, Nelson Mandela’s under the theme: “Celebrating a Children’s Champion” and also to prepare children for a similar gathering in South Africa.

This was a special occasion because this same month of June on 16th, Africa celebrated the Day of the African Child and this year the theme was Child Participation – to enable the children to be seen and heard.

The objectives of the Child and Youth Parliament were to provide platform for children and youth to reflect on issues of leadership and civic participation in promoting the vision of the African Child through dialogue, also to celebrate African Leadership and promote Human Rights and Democratic principles in advancing the lives of children and young people in Africa and to use the legacy of Mandela a tool in promoting active civic participation and dialogue between different generations.

The Children appealed that government should create opportunities not only for the youth to be listened to, but also act in enabling them to assume the responsibilities that would prepare them to be good citizens and cadres for inspirational leadership.

The children that participated were 70 and from diverse organizations that are dealing with vulnerable children; amongst them were child headed those that are affected and infected with HIV/AIDS, orphans, disabled etc. Out of these children 10 were picked to represent Zambia in South Africa. Other countries that participated were South Africa (Various provinces), Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Zambia had the uppermost participation after the final group was formed.

Verse of The Day

“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” (Psalm 143:10)
